Urbanization and Climate Change
Cities are at the centre of Asia-Pacific’s economic growth and development. They provide the environment and social milieu in which more and more people live. Urban areas in the region, though containing around 42 percent of its population, account for 80 percent of the region’s GDP1. Urbanization in Asia and the Pacific is proceeding at a scale and speed unprecedented in human history. It took...
متن کاملClimate change impact on Balearic shearwater through a trophic cascade.
A recent study showed that a critically endangered migratory predator species, the Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus, rapidly expanded northwards in northeast Atlantic waters after the mid-1990s. As a significant positive correlation was found between the long-term changes in the abundance of this seabird and sea temperature around the British Isles, it was hypothesized that the link be...
متن کاملTurbulent World: An Artwork Indicating the Impact of Climate Change
This paper describes an artwork created in response to a question about the role of the artist in communicating climate change issues. The artwork, titled Turbulent World, incorporates turbulence and surprise as a means to visualize the potential instability of our culture and the environment due to climatic changes indicated by increased worldwide temperatures. The artwork makes use of a custo...
متن کاملThe Increase of Exotic Zoonotic Helminth Infections: The Impact of Urbanization, Climate Change and Globalization.
Zoonotic parasitic diseases are increasingly impacting human populations due to the effects of globalization, urbanization and climate change. Here we review the recent literature on the most important helminth zoonoses, including reports of incidence and prevalence. We discuss those helminth diseases which are increasing in endemic areas and consider their geographical spread into new regions ...
متن کاملClimate change, urbanization, and optimal long-term floodplain protection
[1] This paper examines levee-protected floodplains and economic aspects of adaptation to increasing long-term flood risk due to urbanization and climate change. The lower American River floodplain in the Sacramento, California, metropolitan area is used as an illustration to explore the course of optimal floodplain protection decisions over long periods. A dynamic programming model is develope...
